De Blasio a hit with Republicans for all the wrong reasons
Mayor de Blasio’s run for president is turning out to be a huge hit — with Republicans.
The mayor ranks among the top most-talked-about Democratic 2020 primary candidates online, but the majority of the Web chatter is coming from conservatives mocking his quixotic run.
Even though he’s basically dead last in the polls, de Blasio soared to No. 4 on social media as users shared negative stories about the New York leader from outlets like Fox News, The Gateway Pundit and Breitbart, according to data from Storyful.
The latter two sites made up 44 percent of the most shared links, including a Gateway Pundit article that highlights the “WHOPPING Crowd of 18 at Iowa Campaign Stop.”
It showed tweets from journalists covering de Blasio’s kickoff visit to Iowa that included pictures of small crowds listening to him speak, including a photo of a group of just 18 people that was taken by a NY1 reporter.
In fact, Storyful found that #maga, #trump and #trump2020 were among the most used hashtags in relation to de Blasio.
At the same time, de Blasio’s #ConDon nickname for President Trump did not catch on online in the way he had hoped.
All this indicates that Trump supporters may be more enthusiastic about the de Blasio campaign than Democrats are.
The only Dems to top de Blasio when it came to Internet chatter were the front-runner, former Vice President Joe Biden, followed by Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.
The mayor launched his bid on May 16 during an appearance with his wife, Chirlane McCray, on “Good Morning America.”

The announcement was met with derision outside “GMA’s” Times Square studios, where members of the Police Benevolent Association and the anti-cop protest group Black Live Matter stood side by side as they joined in chants of “Liar!”
President Trump wasted no time before tweeting that de Blasio was “considered the worst mayor in the U.S.”
“He is a JOKE, but if you like high taxes & crime, he’s your man. NYC HATES HIM!” Trump added.
A recent poll from Quinnipiac University found that de Blasio has the highest negative rating among the Democrats’ 23 presidential contenders.
The mayor griped about the negative attention, especially from The Post, one day after he started his quest for the White House.
“Rupert Murdoch’s New York Post has been attacking me and ‘Con Don’ himself, Donald Trump, not only tweeted me, he created his own video,” de Blasio said from the campaign trail in Iowa.
“I’m very impressed.”
