Graham: ‘Political suicide’ for Pelosi to try to impeach Trump

Sen. Lindsey Graham said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would be committing “political suicide” if she tries to impeach President Trump.

“Her job is very much at risk,” the South Carolina Republican told “Fox News Sunday.” “Nancy Pelosi is riding a bucking, wild bronco called the Democratic caucus.”

He noted that 70 percent of the Democratic base backs beginning impeachment hearings against Trump.

“She knows that impeachment would be political suicide because there’s no reason to impeach the president. So she’s trying to keep the party intact. If she goes down the impeachment road, Republicans take back the House, we keep the Senate, President Trump gets reelected,” Graham said.

The bitter feud between Pelosi and Trump spilled out in public view last week after both questioned each other’s mental fitness, with Pelosi urging his family and staff to stage an “intervention” and the president shooting back to say she has “lost it.”

During a hastily held news conference in the Rose Garden last Thursday after he walked out of a meeting with Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on infrastructure, Trump said he would not work with Democrats until the investigations into him stop.

But Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic Caucus chairman, had Pelosi’s back on Sunday and ripped Trump as a “studio gangster” for walking out of the meeting with her.

“Donald Trump is functionally a studio gangster. He pretends to be a tough guy but he really is just playing that role on TV,” the Brooklyn lawmaker said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “Hopefully, he will have gotten this temper tantrum out of his system.”

Jeffries said Trump not only walked out of a meeting with Pelosi, but he also “walked out on the American people.”

He also dismissed Trump’s contention that House Democrats cannot pursue investigations into him and work on legislation simultaneously.

“Democrats can sing and dance at the same time just like Beyoncé,” he said.
