Meghan Markle‘s never afraid to break royal protocol through her fashion and beauty choices, whether it’s pairing black and navy together or wearing dark nail polish. While the Duchess of Sussex didn’t rebel against any style rules on Wednesday, she did make a major change to her makeup routine when she stepped out at the premiere of Cirque du Soleil’s Totem show — berry lipstick!

The deep shade is a rare selection for Meghan. She sported the color on occasion in her pre-duchess days, but since becoming a royal, hasn’t been spotted in anything other than pale pink and muted neutral hues.

“The one time she did a red lip, she just didn’t feel comfortable in it,” Meghan’s go-to makeup artist Daniel Martin previously told People. “She likes to talk and she’s not a fussy person, so she doesn’t want to have to worry about anything.”
