A stone memorial that was erected upstate in honor of first responders from 9/11 was reportedly vandalized with spray paint this week.

“To see something like that is really tough,” said Adam Blowes, assistant city manager of Geneva, where the memorial is located.

“You know those people, you see those people…the firefighters, the police officers, EMTs, all those first responders,” he told WROC. “And to have the work that they do be treated that way is sort of unfortunate.”

Cops said they received a report of criminal mischief on Tuesday morning and found the memorial — located on Long Pier near Seneca Lake — with spray paint all over it.

“I don’t think the damage has any real significance,” said Philip Herrick, a local resident who frequents the area and saw the vandalism. “I think its kids being kids doing stupid stuff. I come down here all the time and find garbage left from damage done by kids.”

Andrew Stromfeld, a 9/11 first responder who worked at ground zero, told WROC he was hurt by the incident.

“It brings it all back to us when more attention is played onto it by people doing damaging things, saying damaging things,” he said. “It makes it a lot harder.”

Asked why someone would want to deface a 9/11 memorial, Stromfeld said: “Sometimes it might not be about their feelings but what they don’t take into consideration is what about the people that the monument means.”

Police were reportedly still searching for the culprits Thursday. Anyone with information about who could’ve been behind the vandalism is asked to contact the Geneva Police Department.
